Welcome to the YMCA Camp of Maine's Website

Overview

The State YMCA Board of Directors held a strategic planning retreat in April 2005. Included in the retreat planning was a complete evaluation of all buildings and grounds.

The Facilities and Maintenance Committee was charged with doing a complete evaluation and cost study for revitalization of all buildings and grounds, and with making recommendations for any new building additions. Included in the evaluations were capital improvements to meet current camping standards.

The committee included camp maintenance staff, WBRC Architects (a Bangor architectural firm), a team senior engineering students from the University of Maine, State YMCA board members and the Executive Director.

A study was made of all buildings and grounds. The study prioritized each building and program area that needed to be improved to current camping standards. The study placed each building and program area into a three year revitalization plan based on immediate need.

Study Recommendation

Upgrades are necessary on 48 buildings and most athletic facilities. In particular, all 3 tennis courts, both basketball courts and both sand volleyball courts need to be completely redone.

The main power line into camp must be repaired. The road leading to the waterfront and the upper camp road need to be resurfaced. Culverts need to be added and/or replaced in order to reduce erosion.

Construction of new bathroom and shower facilities, a climbing/repelling tower and a new fence for the Senior campfire site are necessary.

Implementation

The Facilities and Maintenance Committee recommended a three –year capital improvements plan. The most immediate needs would be addressed in the first year.
