Letter from the CVO

Greetings YMCA Camp of Maine friends,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jaime O’Connor and I am the new CVO of the board. I grew up in Winthrop, in fact a few miles away from Y Camp, on the shores of Lake Cobbosseecontee. I started to go to camp at 6 years of age as a camper, became staff at 16 and moved up the ranks to be a program director. When I was not at camp, I participated in several Winthrop Y sports programs and I am a strong advocate for the Y programs in the community. Y Camp gave me a strong foundation in camping administration, which lead me to a profession as an operations director at another YMCA camp for several years.

A few years ago, I wanted to further support Y Camp and decided joining the board would be a great way. I have enjoyed working with an excellent group of community leaders and camp alumni on the board to create a fun and safe experience for our participants and their families.
For over 100 years, the YMCA Camp of Maine has been serving families and are trusted by generations of alumni. We are hoping to continue the legacy of Y Camp, so our future generations can experience our extraordinary landscape on Lake Cobbosseecontee.

Recently, our board has been creating a strategic plan to help us strengthen our programs. Our mission is to provide camping and community programs that promote spiritual, mental and physical growth, and respect the worth and dignity of all people. We plan to oversee and supervise the Winthrop District Area YMCA and to administer and sustain Maine’s Youth in Government Program.

We are hoping to serve youth and young adults from Winthrop, the State of Maine and across the world by helping them develop self-confidence and demonstrate the core values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring in every part of their lives.

The board is looking forward to supporting Jeff Gleason, our CEO, and his full time and seasonal staff while we work on our goals of the strategic plan.
We are hoping you can join us for our annual Alumni Day on Saturday, August 5. This would be a great opportunity to tour camp, participate in camp activities, visit with old (and new friends) and just enjoy the “essence” of Y Camp.

Hope you have a wonderful summer,
Jaime L. O’Connor
