A Capital Campaign for the YMCA Camp of Maine

The YMCA Camp of Maine has served over sixty thousand young men and women since it was founded in 1915. The camp property consists of more than three hundred acres and three islands. It is situated on Lake Cobbosseecontee in Winthrop, and is one of the most beautiful camp environments in the State of Maine.

Throughout its history, The YMCA Camp of Maine has provided a quality program at a very affordable cost. Camper fees have been, and continue to be, among the lowest in all of Maine. Y Campers come from throughout the state and across North America, and from all socio-economic backgrounds. Indeed, it is this unique mix that makes the Y Camp experience so special.

Making this opportunity available to all children has come at a cost. The annual budget has not, and cannot, provide funds necessary to construct new buildings, affect long lasting maintenance, or build facilities designed in order for contemporary programs that appeal to today’s youth.

The last capital improvement plan was held thirty-six years ago. Although, the State YMCA Board of Directors has continued to provide project funding for specific areas since that time, there are many more needs to be addressed. New camping standards necessitate resurfacing of several camp roads and repair of the main power line into camp. A substantial investment must be made in new bathroom and shower facilities. Nearly every cabin as well as the entire athletic court must be renovated.

For this reason, the State YMCA Board of Directors are beginning a three year $1 million capital campaign, the Director’s Campaign, to revitalize the facilities at Y Camp. The Director’s Campaign is chaired by three former camp directors and the current director. Their collective leadership at Y Camp spans more than seven decades. They have agreed to lead The Director’s Campaign because they recognize this effort is essential for the YMCA Camp of Maine to continue to serve the young people of our state.
